Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery

Apr 27, 2018 18:52

I was very much looking forward to Hogwarts Mystery, the new Harry Potter mobile game and I downloaded it as soon as I got the notification that it was available. I've got a little way into it now and I have to say, it's not exactly what I was expecting. There was a big deal made over the fact that they had got the actors from the films to ( Read more... )

I'm going to download it tonight, but I've also been hearing that it's a bit of a disappointment so I've lowered my expectations.

I did. It's definitely not the best game ever, but it's a fun relaxing way to pass the time. And I'm totally using the surname Snyde in a fanfic now!

Yes, it's not great but it's enjoyable. They could have made more of it but it's not like it's dreadful. Snyde is a great name!

I find it so confusing as to why there hasn't been an RPG/interactive game of Harry Potter that is truly worthwhile yet. You'd think that it wouldn't be this hard to basically create an entire RPG based around the Wizarding World, and yet here we are being disappointed once again. I mean, I guess if you have a kid or something this will seem decent enough, but for hardcore Potter fans this will undoubted be boring, repetitive, and honestly unimaginative that does nothing to introduce something new or interesting to expand the world itself (Slytherins being mean just because they're Slytherins, why, groundbreaking material there. -_ ( ... )

Pottermore was quite disappointing, I think a lot of fans were expecting it to be more of an actual way of attending Hogwarts than just progressing through the books. I don't think it helped that the site had to be suitable for younger fans but there were a lot of older people on it too. The interaction was limited, the chat feature in the common rooms was incredibly difficult to use and the fact that you couldn't put numbers in it was ridiculous. I don't think there will ever be a game that pleases everyone mainly because the age range that they have to cover is so vast and at the end of the day, it's aimed at children, not older people.

The graphics look good at least.
I'm not a gamer at all so ... not for me. :-)

It does look pretty good, even on my phone. I imagine it'd look much better on a shiny new tablet :P

Very cool to see screenshots of your version - as a Hufflepuff girl, my best friend Rowan is also a Hufflepuff, but is a girl.. have to say the depiction of the Slytherin common room is miles better than the rather dull room Hufflepuff has (also ours is up some stairs, I was sure in the books their common room is behind barrels near the kitchen?). It does seem a bit daft that Merula is still mean to a fellow Slytherin there, it makes less sense than her being against a student in another house but I suppose the basic things can't be changed too much.

I don't think its a good sign for the game that i've not played it at all today as Sims Mobile is much more fun, when I was looking forward to Hogwarts for so long... finges crossed they'll do something to improve it, so many scathing online reviews from proper magazine critics and not just us poor gamers ;(

I think Rowan is the default best friend for everyone and changes to fit their gender and House. The Hufflepuff common room is in a nook on the right hand side of the kitchen corridor, concealed behind a stack of barrels. That's a shame that it's different in the game. I know I was surprised to see that it's on the same corridor as the Slytherin one. I wonder if the reason Merula is mean even to Slytherins is that they didn't expect anyone to want to be a Slytherin so her meanness wouldn't be out of place!

I've been playing it a bit over the past few days thanks to being ill but it's not a sort of 'omg, must play more' sort of thing.

They should have kept the barrels thing, given they took the trouble to put the windows in Slytherin..

Merula's mean but she's got a cool hairstyle at least! :)

No playing for me till the broadband's fitted.. not that that's a huge sacrifice unlike keeping away from my Sims!

There is some good attention to detail. I noticed the other day that Rowan's tie is unevenly knotted and a bit wonky which is quite fun. Merula's hairstyle is an interesting one!

Aw, are you getting Sim withdrawals?

Shame it's not quite as good as it seemed to have the potential to be

I suppose it's early days yet so they might introduce some other different stuff later on but it's a shame there's not much in the way of variety in the game now.
