Hva gjør du nå?

It's been a while since I've done a MOOC but I did quite a few back to back last year so it was nice to have a bit of a break. I got an email a while ago letting me know about the exciting courses that were on offer this year and one of them was Introduction to Norwegian from the University of Oslo. Well, I'm a sucker for languages and with the ( Read more... )

I'm not sure I'd like to learn Norwegian - it looks awfully complicated. My cousin actually is quite fluent - she took a course at Volkshochschule and has been to Norway several times. She wants to emigrate there.

The only thing I know is that Oslo is pronounces Oosh-loo ... :D

From what I've read, Norwegian is fairly easy for speakers of English to learn. It has three genders for nouns but there's not so much in the way of conjugation for verbs which is a bonus. There's definitely similarities with English and German though, so you probably wouldn't do too badly.

As an example, the numbers one to ten are en, to, tre, fire (pronounced fear-uh, like vier in German but with a more pronounced R giving an uh sound), fem, seks, sjo (pronounced shoo), åtte (pronounced o-tuh), ni, ti.

Norwegian is fun! And the easiest language to learn, I find. I took half a course...ten years ago (o.O. I feel old now) and I still understood that paragraph.

Veldig bra! :) I didn't realise that Norwegian is one of the easiest languages for English speakers to learn but it probably helps that I have the German background too. Did you learn Norwegian just for fun or for a particular reason?

I find learning new languages so challenging. Kudos for you for taking that one!

So, there are three gender choices in Norwegian: she, he and troll. LOL

I think this is about the eighth language I've had a go at, nine if you include American Sign Language.

Well, it's masculine, feminine and neuter really. I was just amused by the name of the trill ;)

Wow, that's pretty good progress for just starting, am most impressed. And envious, I just can't get my head around a new languge just now, so will (as usually happens) enjoy your progress vicariously :)

I'm sure they'll do it again, language courses always seem to get repeated.

I think Norwegian is such a nice sounding language! It has that lilting sound. All the Norwegian I know is from that year I was obsessed with Ylvis, haha. So I suggest you watch some Ylvis to practice! :P

It definitely has a musical quality to it, like Welsh. I have no idea who or what Ylvis is. Oh wait, is that that band that did that annoying fox song that I completely managed to avoid hearing?

Ha, well, yes, but you can't judge them by the Fox when they have works of genius like Stonehenge and The Cabin! Which are admittedly both in English, but there's always Jeg Heter Finn!

The Stonehenge video is corrupted but the bit of it that played and The Cabin sound very much like Weird Al. I am pleased that I managed to understand some of Jeg Heter Finn anyway so that was neat!
