Apples

One of the neighbours came by the other day to give us a load of windfall apples from her garden. She ends up with such a large amount that she shares them out among the surrounding houses. She gave us a few last year but this year we got almost 30! A couple weren't actually very nice but the rest got divided between us and my aunt so we ended ( Read more... )

They're really nice apples, they don't require shed-loads of sugar adding to them for one thing! Love apple crumble though, one of the best things about winter is all the nice hot puddings :)

The challenge is to wait until it's crumble season without eating them all...

It was quite a surprise! We got some apples last year but that was the first time, so we must be on her list now ;) I've got an apple cake recipe which is really nice, and there's the apple and gingerbread pudding I made last year but they both require fresh apples. I'm not up to baking at the moment and I didn't know how long the apples would keep so I had to freeze them. Ah well, can't go wrong with apple crumble :D

Excellent, she's probably pleased to have people to give them too. I wish we lived somwhere where there's a glut of courgettes, lot of US folk joke about wanting to lock their porches down or they'll find buckets of courgettes dumped there, yes please says I! :) I'm sure there are good apple cake recipes using stewed apples, apple sauce etc (which the Yanks call apple butter for some odd reason, it seems..). Sensible to get the apples processed and frozed for future use though :) Is it fresh apples for strudel come Xmas time? Not something I've considered making so I don't know..

She actually came again a couple of days ago with more! She said they'd had a real glut of them this year, probably with it being so wet.

Apple butter is different from apple sauce, it's cooked for much longer so the apples caramelise and go thick and brown. Americans apple sauce is more of a puree, it doesn't have any chunks in at all and looks like baby food. And they spell it all as one word, applesauce, which is quite irritating!

I've never made apple strudel, that's quite tricky because of the pastry. Although I did find a recipe a while ago that was traditional and not quite as difficult as I'd imagined but still fiddly!

I never thought about doing the apples in the oven - there's an idea.

(We're bound to get LOTS of apples again this year. We've got 4 trees.)

Supposedly it helps them keep their shape better and makes them less mushy because they're cooked slower and don't get stirred about so much.

You must get sick of apples! Can you eat them as they are or are they just cooking ones?
