TDoR

It's the Trans Day of Remembrance (TDoR) today. For those who don't know, it started in 1999 from a memorial vigil to Rita Hester who was killed in Allston, Massachusetts the previous year. It's now become a worldwide day of remembrance for those who have murdered as a result of transphobia and to bring awareness to the continued violence ( Read more... )

Those numbers are horrifying. The world we live in where people feel justified in killing another for any reason, but especially because one fears/doesn't understand gender is horrifying.

By the way, I love the idea of the Ask Me Anything. People, who may not know, are curious and the best way to find out is to ask compassionately. If there's ever a way to encourage that, we should.

Oh, I know. The idea that 'this person makes me feel confused, therefore they must be eradicated' makes no sense at all. To resort to such brutality, I really don't understand it.

Educating people is important, especially if it will try and stop more people being added to the list of those being memorialised.

Do the figures include suicide also?
It's just such a huge and needless loss of life. So much hate for people just trying to be themselves :(

No, these are just the ones who have been murdered by others. Part of the reason to have these figures is to raise awareness of the fact that this is still happening, that Trans people are being murdered in such great numbers and the only people who are bothered about it are Trans folk themselves.

The suicide figures are harder to come by because people who are unable to be out and don't give any indication of a Trans identity wouldn't be included. There was a study done in the UK Trans community in 2012 to try and get some figures and I think the result said that 84% of the 889 people in the study had considered suicide at some point. 35% had attempted it once, and 25% more than once. Again, this is something only the Trans community are really aware of and addressing.

The three worst countries are Brazil, India and the US. And the US is getting worse. It's scary.

Terrible and disturbing... the fact that the youngest victim was 13 that's been recorded is especially gut punching. :(

Unfortunately, she's not the youngest. In 2010, in New York, a 16 month old boy was killed by his mother's boyfriend because he was acting like a little girl :(
