Have spade, will dig

Apr 16, 2015 19:10

It's that time of year again. Spring is springing up all over the place, mainly in the form of weeds in my garden. Which means it's time to blow the dust off the spade and fork, pull on the wellies and get my hands dirty again ( Read more... )

Do you have some grass areas?
Look up for "prairie fleurie" on Google (I don't know the english term for that... Wildflower meadow???).
I'm not sure how much work it requires, though, but it looks quite nice.

Just the lawn really. Wildflower meadow seems to be the right translation. It does look nice but I'm not sure there's the space for that, the garden is only small. I did try having one area set aside for wildflowers but it didn't grow!

I like the Pineapple Popsicles - never seen those before. I know the red variety, though.

I know the red variety too, this seems to be a new kind, possibly American seeing as I could only find it on American sites! It's drought tolerant and pretty low maintenance so that's ideal ;)

Low maintenance sounds good! ;-)

Definitely. I already have a decent amount of plants that want pruning at the beginning or end of the season - I spent all Sunday morning pruning two rose bushes, two Penstemon and two Hebes as it was. The more plants I get that don't want anything doing to them at all, the better! :)

They are! Do you like them just as they are or do you like cooking them in something?

That is a new idea to me! How do you warm the blueberries? Just put them in a pan with a bit of water?

Yes! And they freeze well too which is good because I'm going to have LOADS.

Glad its going so well after all your hard work, and yay making plans and deciding what to do next, good to know the blueberry is doing well too, fingers crossed you get tasty berries this year, which will no doubt end up in some cookery concoction - Americans always seem to put them in pancakes when not muffins I believe...

Last year I decided I'd have to start planning properly, and working what plants to get for which parts of the garden because just picking random things gets expensive! I think it's definitely made a difference, so each year there's fewer plants to replace which is good :)

I like blueberries just on cereal. They go very nicely with Weetabix of all things, or in porridge. Pancakes and muffins do seem to be the standard. I have no idea what else to do with them although I'm sure there's lots of options.

Yes, going to a garden centre without a plan is fatal, tho fun :) tho sometimes even the best planing ends up with the plants needing replaced if they disagree about the spot you've chosen for them, my poor fuchsia just withered and died its first winter, in a sunny if sheltered spot, whereas the one in the back near the pond has flourished for a good 15 years now..

I'm allergic to them sadly, but they are nice with cakes, mum sometimes puts victoria sponge into a flat tin then cuts that into squares of cake which are lovely with cream and then blueberries on.. you can put another square on top as a lid too but i prefer them with less cake, more fruit :)

Fuschias aren't frost hardy at all as far as I'm aware so it's not surprising the first one died during the winter. You must have got really lucky with the second to have it last that long!

You're allergic to Weetabix? Your mum's thing of the cake with cream and berries would be nice, or ooh! With meringue nests instead of cake. Mmm! And chaquir above mentioned having warm and squidgy blueberries with ice cream, like a sort of blueberry sauce I think, and I bet that'd be nice with the sponge cake or meringue nests too.
