Ten + Ten

Following on from the sketch of the Tenth Doctor that I posted the other day, I've now done a digital version. I outlined the sketch in Illustrator and added flat colour as that was my initial plan. However, on Friday, D suggested that I tried adding shading with Photoshop's dodge and burn tool so that's what I've done this morning. Here's both ( Read more... )

Ten2! Yay! The shading really does add so much to the coat and the hair in particular. The one without the shading already looks good, but with the shading it looks so much more alive. Did you just eyeball it and freehand where you thought the shading should go? I knew you had an excellent eye, but if you did that I'm still v impressed. It looks outstanding and very true to life. It's a shame that you have to redraw him but the new sketching style sounds interesting and like a fun thing to try.

How else would I work out where the shading would go? It's art, it's not science.

I know, I meant as opposed to spending lots of time studying pictures to learn about where exactly the shading should go and how to make it look most realistic. I don't think most people can look at their sketch and just know how to shade it so that it looks the most realistic. You're talented, that's all. :)

It's shadows! It's not that hard. You decide where the light source is and hey, shadows. Please stop trying to make it sound like I've done something out of this world amazing when it's really incredibly simple.

I'm glad you think so. As I've been looking at them since, there was something that just didn't gel with them. I'm much happier with the second sketch I did, which I've just posted.

It's definitely better with the shading, isn't it? I posted a new sketch earlier on too, did you see that one?
