Button mad

Jul 12, 2011 19:49

I've been busying playing about with The Gimp this afternoon, making buttons for my website. I wanted social media ones to show the sites that I'm on as well as various messengers that I use. I'd had a look to see if there were buttons available, but of course none of the sets that I found had all the sites I wanted so I ended up making my own ( Read more... )

These are gorgeous! I went O.O when I saw them cos they're just so eye-catching and shiny. I love how vivid the colours are and how crisp and clear it all is. You definitely didn't do too badly at all. :P

Well, I didn't make the actual logos if that makes any difference. They're all on a black background which probably helps make them look brighter.

It's still impressive though. Did you have any trouble finding logos that were big enough for your purposes, or did you just blow up smaller ones and sharpen them? The black background does probably help make them look brighter but even so, they struck me as particularly vivid and glossy/polished. Very nice. :)

I didn't have problems with the size of the logos because the buttons are only small anyway. Those are the actual size of them in the picture there.

They're supposed to look glossy in the centre because I'm clever and know how to do that. Some of the logos had a gloss effect on them already though, the ones for AIM, Goodreads, LibraryThing and Skype.

I love how the background is purpley, very shiny and definitely not bad at all.

Gimp is definitely up there as graphics progs go, they have these awesome flare-things in one of the menus that I've used as part of our work logo. And all free.

Thank you :)

Initially I didn't like the Gimp because I'd used Corel's Paintshop Pro for years so it took me a while to get used to the Gimp. When I told the people at the college that I was using the Gimp, the woman didn't look at all impressed, probably because she'd never heard of it, and said I needed to use Photoshop and Illustrator because that's what people in the business used. They're very expensive though!

I use a mix of everything, gimp and photoshop and corel draw. As far as our printers and things go they like to use Corel and I was under the impression that was industry wide. Designers and the rest like PS and Adobe products, which start at £550 *faint*

The only way round would be the naughty way, or look at the website software4students (.co.uk I think), you might get a deal on there. Or other similar studenty websites.

I didn't know about the software4students site so thanks for the info. It has Photoshop on there for nearly £170 which is still ridiculously expensive. I really hope I don't need to buy either and can just carry on using the Gimp because it would be so much cheaper! And there's the whole thing about not having a Windows computer, although I suppose I could use my stepfather's laptop which is seriously full of crap.
