So what now?

Sep 09, 2022 12:05

The UK is now in national mourning which will last for 12 days, until the day after the Queen's funeral. The Royal Family will stay in mourning for a month, I think. All flags are at half-mast and will remain so until the national mourning is over. Various events have been cancelled such as the last few days of the Proms and several sporting ( Read more... )

Ah - I'd hoped the funeral would be earlier as I'll be on holiday on the 19th.

New passports as well? Didn't think about that yet, but I guess you'll just get a new one when the old one expires? They won't change all that right away?

I'm only guessing at the date for the funeral but I believe it's supposed to be 10 days after her death. The 18th is a Sunday so I presume it will be on the following Monday instead.

The BBC has produced an article explaining some of the things that will change. Most will be phased in gradually over the next few years. The passport wording will be changed but yes, people will just get a new one when theirs expires. Mine expired a few years ago but I never replaced it as I didn't see the need if I wasn't travelling internationally so much.

I'm glad that you're enjoying these posts and finding them informative! I know I previously posted about Prince Philip's death and the recent debacle surrounding Boris Johnson's resignation but these aren't the usual sorts of things that I post about in case that makes any difference.

I would never assume 2 posts to be the sum of an LJ's worth of thought. :-)

That's a relief! I had someone remove me after my first post about the Queen which was unexpected. I didn't want it to work the other way and cause disappointment by not making regular posts about UK current affairs and news!

I've been curious about what the mood must be like in the UK, so I appreciated reading this post. I know that most of news coverage in Toronto yesterday was focused on the Queen's death. I noticed this morning that the newsreaders were wearing either black or darker clothing. Here in Toronto, they dimmed the lights of the CN Tower and the Toronto sign. I think most flags are also at half mast. In Canada, we'll also need to change coins, bills and stamps.

There's probably more of a mood in London, Windsor and the Balmoral area. I can't say as I've noticed much of one where I am, but I'm far removed from those other places which makes a difference.

It really is pretty surreal, and with lots of little changes, you're right about that.

It is SO surreal. Yesterday as I was watching the new King greet the crowds outside the Palace, I said that it just felt completely unreal and it's still difficult to believe that it's happened.
