Does my cat really love me or is he just in it for the food?

Dear, lord! Haven't read the article in your link yet, but I will, only because I love you. You should "friend" my friend dragonlady7. She got a new kitten this week, which I have been reading about in great detail. (Ouch! I'm laughing so hard my tummy hurts.) My question is not what do cats see in people, but what people see in cats?? It's bad enough that my daughter is having a baby this month...that's enough small mammals to last me for quite a while. Meanwhile, I know, just ignore me, I'm no fun at all. I admit I am a Debbie Downer this week.

I've been reading about dragonlady's kitten and we've had a back and forth on the question. I've "friended" her, and hope she will reciprocate.

LOL... so whenever they give you that Fixed Stare, they´re actually pondering the pros and cons of friending you?

Just as, when they rub rapturously back and forth across your legs, they're not saying "I love you," but "mine, mine."

Make sure you read the actual article the blog is referring to. There's lots of bits of history and links to other sites. Quite interesting. I've read a similar theory of the domestication of dogs--that they evolved from wolves out of losing fear of humans so that they could hang around at the garbage dump etc. The "man's best friend" thing came later, along with the barnyard mouser and the catnip toys.

That makes perfect sense. I always knew that domestic animals couldn´t be that stupid.

I've always been in favor of the "Daddy, Pleeeeze, can I keep it? Pleeeeze?" theory of domestication. Which would mesh pretty well with the "Food. Shelter. Warmth. What's not to like?" theory.

We have been thinking about getting a couple of kittens from the SFSPCA (Yes, I come down firmly on the "two is better than one" side). I am sure that when it happens, I will be all over with the photos & kitten cuteness.
