I went to 7th grade in a suburb of Nashville, Tennessee. At the public high school I attended, I had a few friends who continued with me from my elementary school. That semaphore flag signaling stuff was actually the last thing that I thought that I would ever have any practical use for from my Boy Scout training. I think that I was just fascinated with codes of any sort. That was the days of James Bond and secret decoder rings in the cereal boxes, after all.
