I went to 7th grade in a suburb of Nashville, Tennessee. At the public high school I attended, I had a few friends who continued with me from my elementary school. However, it was a stressful period in my life in which one of my few continuing activities and stable peer groups was the Boy Scouts

That semaphore flag signaling stuff was actually the last thing that I thought that I would ever have any practical use for from my Boy Scout training. I think that I was just fascinated with codes of any sort. That was the days of James Bond and secret decoder rings in the cereal boxes, after all.
