When I read it last night I smiled a lot, Johnny Depp is one of the good ones and it makes you appreciate him as an overall person even more.

Yeah, you were on the thread at the 'Rama about this, right? That's where I saw it originally. I had to Google it to make sure this was for real, because I couldn't believe it at first. So awesome.

when this initially happened last year, the press releases surrounding were fairly ambiguous, our of respect for the family's privacy. it's nice to see how thankful he was. some people take their health for granted.

it's always nice to know that some people make good of excess income. angelina jolie does the same thing - she's mentioned before that she donates 50 percent of her paychecks because she "makes ridiculous income".

That much? Nice! You mentioning just how much she donates reminded me of Bill Gates. Despite whatever criticisms people may have of MS and their business practices I don't see how someone can crit his philanthropy.

I think I remember reading that when he dies about $10M or thereabouts would go to his child or children each... and the rest? All to charity. With as much personal wealth as he has? Oh. My. God. Reading stuff like this gives me warm fuzzies.

When I was a kid, my dad used to drive us past Bill Gates' house (or, you know, as near as you could get back then) and say "Look how he lives. But he still makes a point to give back to other people."

He's a very good example of a true philanthropist.
