My niece is young enough to still believe in the literal Santa, even though she's in 5th grade, and we like the idea of doing little things to preserve that. Because of this, presents always appear aside from the regular presents which are from Santa. This year she was going to her dad's early Christmas morning, so the Santa gifts needed to appear Christmas eve, and we decided they would come while she was taking her bath. To make it more realistic, while she was in the bath, I carefully retrieved a tambourine and carried it silently downstairs. When jingled, it sounded just like sleigh bells. She came out in her pyjamas saying she had just heard Santa come by, so for another year she still believes.

What's funny is she has two other items of proof that Santa exists. She wrote him a letter a couple years ago and got an answer, and my mom took a picture of Santa walking down the street Christmas morning last year.

I had a moment of geek nirvana, after the snow was just beginning to soften, and I noticed how much easier it was to drive on the packed crust than to drive on the sloppy iceberg tarmac.

Shifts in scientific paradigm, and changes in social climate might feel this way: for a while it still seems safer to do things the old way, but once the phase shift is more complete, the new way is much easier.

Probably not the kind of thing you were looking for, but that was the best thing happening to me all week.

It'd have to be when I visited the cemetery with my dad when it was covered with snow. I normally think the cemetery is a beautiful, tranquil place, but it was completely transformed when covered with snow. It added an extra calm to it I had never seen or felt before.

Mindy and I were supposed to travel to Spokane on Christmas Day and we were both really unenthusiastic about it. Then Spokane got hit with a blizzard and we had to stay home. That ended up being the most fun we've had as far as Christmas goes yet. It was very peaceful, quiet, and moved at entirely our own pace. I kind of hope we can do it again next year.
