Game Night

Dec 20, 2007 08:55

Last night really hit the spot.

I had a chance to play Winds of Plunder for the first time.

I also got to play Hollywood Blockbuster.

Both of these were new to me, and both were fun games.

I also had a chance to discuss Project GIPF with Ron. In a few weeks, we may be playing some GIPF games ( Read more... )

Speaking of games, I was thinking of something game-related that you might know... do you know if there are any tactical board games that simulate fog of war?

Yes and no. It depends on what you mean by "Fog of War"

"Command and Colors: Ancients" (and "Memoir '44" and "Battle Cry" and "Battlelore") simulate a Fog of War through use of command cards - you don't know what your opponent has.

You could argue that "Stratego" is all about the Fog of War ...

There are other games that are or can be played in a double-blind format - it requires three copies of the game and a referee. Many of them are playable by e-mail.

Stratego was one of the only games I could think of that really simulated Fog of War as I was thinking of it (you can't see opponent's units unless they are w/in sight range and conditions of your units, or some other circumstance). The only other game I could think of that did it would be Battleship, as that does what you said, giving each player their own copy of the map. I suppose Fog of War w/ hidden units is just really hard in a table-top situation.

So, what games are played in a double-blind format with manufacturer published rules (if any)? If there aren't any, what games have after market workarounds?

I've seen double-blind Battletech.

Empires in Arms isn't a tactical-level game - you know where everyones armies are, but not how powerful each army is.

Most Hex-and-Chit wargames have some mechanism to simulate fog of war.

As far as double-blind ... there aren't a lot of manufacturer-published rules sets. Sniper comes to mind.

There are rules for Axis and Allies double-blind on BoardGameGeek.

Here is an excellent list that may fill exactly what you're looking for.
