Catching Fire and Mockingjay

As I mentioned recently, both dayzdark and I have been reading a lot of books lately. One series that we both read and found interesting was the Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins. I know I mentioned liking the first book, The Hunger Games, a while back, so I will focus right now on the second and third books, Catching Fire and Mockingjay. ( Read more... )

The first book is very self-contained, so yes, you could certainly stop there. This is particularly true if you've been spoiled for the overall ending, as you say. At the end there are obviously some dangling plot threads which are wrapped up in the following two volumes, but there aren't like any massive cliffhangers or anything. (Fair warning: the second book does end on a massive cliffhanger.) I think that whether you need to read the second and third books really comes down to whether you are interested enough in the world of the first that you're willing to read books that go beyond the very focused setting in The Hunger Games and explore what goes on outside of that after the events of the first book.
