So I was under the impression that I didn't actually like Doctor Who, but after seeing the series 3 finale I have come to realize that this is not actually the case. Rather, I like Doctor Who perfectly well; the issue is that I hate Rose Tyler. I fail to see how after watching Utopia/The Sound Of Drums/Last Of The Time Lords, anybody could ( Read more... )

That first link: OH MY FUCKING GOD YES.

I'm still wading through comments on the racism link. I definitely agree with the idea expressed, but we'll see how long before I give up on reading fans arguing about race.

And as for the fic: I can't believe that somebody combined Doctor Who and Borges! That was incredibly fun to read. Thanks!

Yeah. "Martha saved the world. All by herself" has become one of those phrases I repeat to myself when I need cheering up. :)

As for the racism argument, it's not something I especially hold against RTD or Doctor Who, but just part of a general pattern of characters of color being less valued than white characters, which seems more and more prevalent the more I pay attention, even though it's also probably slowly getting better with time. :/ (I mean, omg, Supernatural.)

It's really hard to be scared of Art Deco trashcans. Just saying.

Maybe if I were 5 years old they would be scarier, but yeah, I'm not, so.

Is that a good "wait until" or a bad "wait until?" I do know Rose comes back but I figured that would have to happen eventually anyhow.

The problem I had with Martha Jones was that, until the very end, there was so damn little to her character than "I have a massive unrequited crush on The Doctor".

The trouble was that they only seemed to bother to develop her character after she stopped being a companion.

Of course, it'll be a cold day in hell before my dream candidate (Sally Sparrow) ever gets to be a companion.

The problem I had with Martha Jones was that, until the very end, there was so damn little to her character than "I have a massive unrequited crush on The Doctor".

That's the case with almost all Companions though. And one of the things I appreciated about Martha was the fact that she did care about her life away from the Doctor and in the end she realized that it was more important to her.

Also, Ten/Rose is one of those things I just. Do. Not. Get. Not in the sense that I hate the pairing, but in the sense that I don't understand how fans and the writers could see their relationship as romantic rather than a father/daughter style relationship (plus I remain thoroughly unconvinced on whether Time Lords can be sexually attracted to anyone). So that made a lot of Rose-related stuff really grating for me.
