Is there anything in the entire world that feels better than perfectly fulfilling a craving? It certainly would not seem so at the moment, because I am eating exactly what I wanted for lunch, which is to say a "special" banh mi from Saigon Restaurant (aka the best way in the world of combining meat, bread, and vegetables, except maybe that kebab place in Granada at the bottom of Calderería Nueva which may or may not be called Baraka but at any rate is the food of the gods). When it became clear that I was not going to be able to accomplish anything worthwhile at all until my craving was satisfied, I braved the weather (-5 F/-20 C right now, if you are in Australia I hate you out of contractual obligation) and came back with the prize without even losing my parking spot. Now I am warm and happy and eating a flaky French Bread sandwich with jalapeños and pickled carrots and cilantro and mayonnaise and Vietnamese mystery meat. And I still have a second one in my bag. Protip: total contentment can be bought, and it costs only $5.
