Tax breaks ultimately just end up screwing other industries anyway. Revenue has to come from somewhere.

if you think about it though anything revolved around making money has to screw somone somewhere. Look at exports obviously if some other country is exporting raw materials just to import goods they are getting the short end of the stick, this is called Mercantilism.

This tax break would have been a great way to convince game companies to set themselves up in North Carolina. It sure would be nice to have a few more job opportunities on THIS SIDE OF THE CONTINENT.

Once again, this involves my state.... trenthowell August 6 2006, 00:45:15 UTC
*begin ranting personal opinion of NC government*
so i'm putting my 2 cents into this.

Like was said, the tax break was probably a move to bring more jobs into NC as the primary motive. But most of the people in the NC government would rather not give any tax credit to anyone cause it would mean less money in their pockets in the short run(heaven forbid we take money out of their paychecks). They tend not to do much of anything unless it wastes state money or puts more money in the officials pockets regardless of anyone elses opinion.

Its like an annexation that went on around Fayetteville, they tried(and succeded last i checked) to annex a little town called Hope Mills near it and the city can't provide enough police or fire fighters(as an example) to the newly annexed area. Now that its annexed, nothing has changed anywhere around it. No one even knows what the extra tax money is being used for, but everyone realized that there was a small jump in their pay though.

*end ranting personal opinion*

The Game industry could stand to be a little less centralized. Seems like if you want a good shot at getting into the game industry, you've got to live either in California, Texas, or Washington. It'd be nice if incentives like these could help spread the industry around a little more.

Maryland and NC have nice little development communities... perhaps there are others as well.

Well, Volition is based in Illinois, that's pretty close. But I can't think of any development communities in Ohio.

I ditto the rant about NC's government. Local and state governments are all too happy to bring in retailers that bring in sales tax revenue, but don't really fight to keep textile mills open or make sure that farmers are making a decent living. And you're screwed if you live in a more rural area.

And unless NC does more to bring in companies that require skilled professionals, we're going to have a job scene like we did in 2001-2002.

ya know, I luv NC as a vaction spot...

Visit the Outer Banks (barrier island seashore area) just about every year. But when I was down there last week, I heard that the state is #46 in Net connectivity, that only 20% of its residents have access to the Net.

They need to work on that. Big time.

That statistic doesn't surprise me. Large areas of the state are mostly rural and have lousy phone and cable service. There are large areas of the state where cell phone service is nonexistant.

And quite a few people that apparently take pride in being computer illiterate.
