Michigan is among the highest ranked states for unemployment and general unhealthiness. I know lots of people who'd like Governor Granholm to focus on those problems.

For the newspapers to rag on Granholm for this because this is blatiantly just a waste of taxpayer money. The newspapers also caught on to the fact that this type of legislation is completely unnessicary.

I find it interesting that media such as Newspapers seem to be a lot less sensationalist about the whole affair than the TV media is. Maybe they've just had more practice at looking at things objectively rather than from a 'quick buck' point of view?

I wonder of ease of use has something to do with it. It's easy for someone to have the news spoon-fed to them via the TV, but picking up and reading an actual newspaper? That takes some effort. Are the readers in some way considered better and worth the higher quality reporting?

Or maybe it's competition: TV has to fight it out with whatever's being aired at the moment, but the newspaper only has other papers to deal with, espically where subscribers are concerned. Maybe there's just not as big a need to bring in those ratings so as a result the news is less sensationalist?

I think it's something to do with reader base as well, most of the more rational views seem to come from papers that cover specific areas, and are aware of the problems and situations in the area they cover, local newspapers, as it were, it seems to only get massively blown out of proportion when reported on national media, possibly because, as you say, competion demands more sensational stories to grab viewers.
