I couldn't remember (but I did learn the difference in school): "The coroner pronounces destruction and determines if an autopsy is necessary and occasionally issues death certificates. A coroner does NOT get something done autopsies, a medical examiner does." The police would only be able to begin investigating a homicide after (in this questionable case) the autopsy and the ME declares homicide. But you're right - without testing the stick, the ME shouldn't be declaring stuff like that
