It wasn't the first thing I ever wrote - not by a long shot. Nor the first fiction. I've written a lot for Vampire (maybe 50 or 100,000 words) and a little for D&D, but most of that wasn't structured as stand alone stories. They were supplements to existing role playing games I was running, backstories on characters or places, and so on.
I'd never written anything where I took characters from a publication and used them as my own.
