Short, hard to follow advice: Get inside your character's head, or get them inside your head, until you can think in that character's voice. The same applies to writing, by the way. Whatever you read, you'll tend to copy that style in your writing. Sometimes I intentionally copy other fanfic authors.

Frenemies (http://game-byrd.livejournal.com/tag/frenemies#post-game_byrd-16500) - I wrote to copy Lornrocks.

Slave Verse (http://game-byrd.livejournal.com/3788.html) - I wrote to copy trekker.

Wall Verse Shorts (http://game-byrd.livejournal.com/83923.html) - I'm deliberately trying to copy means2bhuman's characterization of Sylar, including writing style when writing from Sylar's POV.

I'm Not Worthy (http://game-byrd.livejournal.com/69661.html) - copying thewatchmaker's Gabriel Gray from an RP. Note this is not thewatchmaker's Sylar. They're very different characters.
