She found herself watching him. She wasn’t sure why at first, the power rolling off him in waves wasn’t dangerous. It didn’ set off her slayer senses the way some of the more unnatural people that walked into the bar did.

Every night he came and every night she watched him.

She was starting to figure it out though. Part of the reason she felt so drawn to him was his hair.

Spike had had that color hair, but his had been fake, chemically created and often slicked back with so much gel it shined and enhanced his sharp checkbones from model pretty to dangerous.

His hair was the same light color, but it was natural and soft, falling in his eyes and a part of her longed to touch it just to see if it was real, if he was real. It caught her attention from across the room everytime she saw his head bent over his drink, everytime he shifted his face so that his hair feel down and a smirk touched his lips.

It was the power too that got her, normally, anything remotely supernatural made her Slayer senses yell at her, jarred at her from left and right and kept her on her toes adrenaline roaring through her, her body primed to fight.

It told her to hunt and kill and kick some ass, the whole destiny thing.

His was different thought, for some reason it calmed her, rolled over her like the waves of an ocean, instead of angry it was calm and steadying and that had spooked her enough to call Giles.

Because each night he walked into the bar that Buffy was working in Cleveland she felt herself grow closer and closer to sitting down beside him and letting herself soak up that rare sensation.

It had been a long time since she had been calm.

Since she was called she had gone from one extreme to another, sorrow, pain, rage, one battle after another with never a moment to catch her breath and keep breathing.

Now that she wasn’t the only Slayer in the world the battles had changed and she was officialy “retired” but it was a running joke among the Scoobies what the last five words in that one was. What all of them felt, tired, used, worn-out.

Everytime she got near him it all faded though and she felt herself just be.

It had taken Giles awhile to find out the answers she needed and while Buffy was waiting she had taken to avoiding Reid Garwin and his soft hair like a plague thing that needed to be avoided.

Her nerves had been strecthed to the breaking point in the last week and she had been seriously considering quitting her job just to get away from it. Problem was she loved her job, she got to be a semi-normal girl for once with a normal job.

The answer had been so unexpected she had laughed when Gles first told her, sure it was a weird Watcher joke thing that he was making cause sometimes he tried to hard and came off sounding very unfunny.

Apparently, one of the Shadow Men that had created the Slayer line had been a Warlock, the one interferring old guy that had actually done something to make sure the Slayer line had options in the world to make their lives not so secluded, to fight off the loneliness that came with the whole “one girl chosen in all the world” thing.

Turned out the guy had put in a clause that allowed Slayers to find peace in their calling and in the dark force that had created them by finding a Warlock in the world and making him her honey. Buffy wouldn’t have believed it if Giles hadn’t told her that the clause also gave the Warlock the Slayer picked a reprieve from the power they used aging their body.

The abilities Warlocks could command was terrifying in its sheer power, the amount they could use would put Willow to shame but when they turned eighteen that power became their life and if they used too much they would kill their bodies aging before their time.

She wouldn’t have believed it if it hadn’t been a completely self serving act on the Warlock guys part so he could cozy up with the first Slayer and use his powers without turning into a dried up husk.

It was a selfish thing that made sense with the men she had meet briefly.

So, it turned out Buffy was feeling drawn to one Reid Garwin because some Slayer loop-hole had her inner she-monster purring like a kitten and damn if she wasn’t getting addicted to the feeling. The only thing that would have her running now was if the pretty haired Warlock knew of this.

He didn’t, so Buffy knew it wasn’t some ploy on his part to stay all powerful and risk free.

He didn’t even know, didn’t have any clue that she knew what he was and could provide him a way out of the threat that hung over him.

So, she began sitting closer to him, moving nearer to him, hell, she even worked up the courage to talk to him and damn if his voice didn’t make butterflies go nuts in her stomach and the haunted look in his eyes pull at her heart.

She had a thing for the damaged, sarcastic type.

She really hated being controlled by something not of her choice, hated something else having power over her.

Still, she wouldn’t give in. She needed to know why this was happening, she needed to trust in it before she let herself be swept away and right now she didn’t, she didn’t trust Reid Garwin enough to let him know, or herself, of the hold he had over her.
