Emily came home from work after an exhausting day of teaching. There was an Impala parked by her house. She wasn't sure what to think of Dean's return to town.
"How was your day?" Dean stepped away from where he'd been leaning against his car.
"Long. What brings you to town?" her voice was curt.
"I, uh, realize that I left without saying goodbye," Dean looked at his boots. "I can't explain why I had to leave, but I wanted to come back and make it right."
"What makes you think you deserve the chance?"
"Well, maybe the fact that you might have missed me?"
Emily sighed and nodded. "I need to put my book bag in. Then, you owe me supper."
She warmed up to Dean over supper. She already knew he was coming home with her. She thought he knew that, too.
During conversation, Emily had mentioned that she's seen something in the kitchen in the middle of the night one night. She thought it was a resident who had passed on in a car wreck years before.
She thought it odd that Dean grabbed a duffle from the trunk before going up to her room. He hadn't had anything with him the last time he'd stayed the night.
Dean asked her to show him where she saw the thing in the kitchen, wondering why he wanted to know. Did he think she'd lost it?
Once in the kitchen, Dean seemed to taker her seriously, almost too seriously. She'd shown him the whole room and they were on their way out when it appeared.
Dean dropped his duffle and took out his trusty sawed-off shotgun. He shot the spirit and it disappeared.
"What the hell was that?" Emily was beyond shocked.
"A spirit. Any idea what wouldn't let her rest in peace?"
"No, I didn't know her that well. Why?"
"There's something keeping her here," Dean put the shotgun back in his duffel. "We'll have to figure out what it is. Otherwise, we'll need her name to find out where she'd buried."
Emily wasn't sure why he'd need to know where someone was buried. It made her trust in him waver big time.
"What do we do now?" she asked.
"Get some sleep. I'll be busy tomorrow."
Emily just looked at him. When she shook off the disbelief over what she had seen, she followed Dean up to her room.
"What are you doing?" she asked as she watched him pour something white along her door and windows.
"Just putting down some protection. The spirit can't cross rocksalt. That's the same thing I shot it full of downstairs."
"How do you know this stuff?" she asked before she realizing she might not want to know the answer.
"It's my job," he said simply. "Now you know why I had to leave. I got an emergency call from a friend about a job that needed to be taken care of. I couldn't wait until morning and I couldn't explain what I do anyway."
"Why not?"
"It's a secret. I was raised to hunt."
"What do you mean?"
"If I tell you, you can't tell anyone."
She agreed.
He told her about the fire that killed his mother and his father's obsession to find the thing that killed her. How he and Sam learned about hunting like most kids learn to play. They were raised in a different environment, one where true evil existed and needed to be fought.
Emily listened as Dean talked. She didn't question a word he said after seeing what she'd seen downstairs. She hadn't known of the evil in the house, but she knew she was protected. Dean had taken care of that.
The next night, Dean came back filthy, long after dark. After a shower, Dean told her that he'd taken care of the spirit. Emily wouldn't see it in her kitchen anymore.
After knowing that, she welcomed Dean into her bed. They had a long, loving weekend. Although she didn't know all of the evil that was out there, she knew that Dean knew about evil and he'd protect her.
