I'm proud to live next to the enlightened State of Massachusetts

Jun 15, 2007 08:08

Yesterday Massachusetts legislators voted against a measure that would have placed the three-year-old right of same-sex marriage in the state in jeopardy by nixing a public vote on a constitutional amendment that could have possibly reversed that right.

Today I may celebrate the news with baked scrod, baked beans, and Boston cream pie.

Even though I often complain about the gay rights movement's completely fucked-up approach to a lot of issues that affect me very closely, this is still a nice victory which deserves to be celebrated. Congratulations to Massachussetts for demonstrating that the United States of America is not exclusively made up of biggots and reactionaries, as we are too often led to believe here abroad.

Of course not, though those types often get into positions of power, like the current president and others of that ilk that represent the despicable curse of the American "religious" right.

You Canadians are ahead of us on this same-sex marriage issue, and perhaps a few others.

Ahead of you, but not by far. Everywhere I look, I see signs of the conservative right becoming more prominent. Our current goverment is obviously heavily influenced by yours and our Prime Minister uses expressions like "God bless you" in his speeches. (This is common for US presidents, but I'd never heard a Canadian politician use this before.) Even in Quebec, supposedly one of the most progressive provinces in the country, I see signs of racism, xenophobia, and various other forms of prejudice on an almost daily basis.

I could go on, but I'll just get depressed. That post of yours was supposed to be a celebration. :)

It's refreshingly surprising. I mean, in a lot of other aspects, Mass seems rather conservative. I in my pessimism predicted that it would probably go the other way...

But... today I too am proud to live next to the enlightened state of Massachusetts!
Now, if only i were gay and needed to get married. Then i'd be all set. Heh.
