A book I once read about the making of the film said that there was sexual hanky-panky and other mayhem among them on the set.

The movie itself is brilliant. Personally though, I prefer to let my mind drift to eerier places. You may or may not have done this, but playing Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" album as the soundtrack to the movie? It's amazing how much it matches up. There's theories out there that they were watching the movie as they wrote the music to the album...

I know I've seen the movie a couple times as it is, but more times with Pink Floyd being the sound for the movie.

Sounds like heresy to me! I'm a purist and adore the music it already has. No need to tamper with perfection. Why re-design the wheel or the penis? But, who knows, you may have something. My only real exposure to Pink Floyd was the movie Pink Floyd The Wall, which I first saw with a La Salle teacher in Montreal in 1982. I remember the film's soundtrack and sound-system in the York Theatre being ear-splitting. I also have Roger Waters' "opera" Ça ira, which Mike Coutts gave me last year.

Have you seen/heard Wicked? It is magnificent. I cannot say enough about it. I'm obsessed. I have a very unhealthy relationship with the CD.

I got to see it this evening at PPAC. What a marvelous production! It had such great staging and effects. The first act finale is spectacular and not matched anywhere else. The story line is very clever, and I was taken by that and by the witty dialog. To my ears the music itself seemed like genericbroadwaymusic, which may be a cheap shot. Perhaps I need to get to know it better, which I suppose can be said about anything. In short I was impressed more by what I saw than what I heard sung, as professional as the singing was.

Yes, the finale, "Defying Gravity," is orgasmic. It is, I agree, the best end of any Act One I've ever seen or heard. I wonder if you've heard/seen it by the great Idina Menzel, originator of the role? I have various videos of her doing the number. I could send you them via e-mail, if you like. Her 2003 Tony Awards performance floors me every time.

Sure, why not? I would certainly watch it all.

Oh! One more thing. Salman Rushdie wrote a wonderful long essay on The Wizard of Oz, and it's included in his collection called Step Across This Line. I highly recommend it.
