When I was reading GoT I was in the middle of a very harsh political struggle, both office politics and real life politics, all mixed in one. I was at home for Christmas, and started reading Song, and when I reached the point of that conversation between Cersei and Ned Stark it was like illumination. When she tells Ned that whether he likes it or nor he is playing the Game Of Thrones...basically, don't bring a knife to a gun machine fight and also expect to come out alive.
I don't really know if Martin actually tried to make Ned Stark came across as honorable...but to me he is rather selfish and a bit stupid in the end...
