My only experience of this was with one woman who I knew slightly. I also knew her husband and had spoken to him a few times as his illness progressed.
Anyway, I met her one day (this is years ago) and asked how he was. "I wish now that it would just be quick," she said. She also told me how dreadful saying that made her feel, but like you she found that he was changed and the final period was terribly hard for her and her young daughter. I think it's impossible to imagine, but I just wanted to tell you that that one brief conversation stuck in my mind - she was a very strong woman (notoriously so in our circle) but in the end she just wanted it to end.
All I can add is that she and her daughter recovered and went on to be fine. But i just wanted somehow to tell you that your experience has been shared by others. I hope it's okay to say this, I'm not sure how to word it.
