Poet? Me?
So I've been trying my hand at poetry. And let me tell you, the past week has just confirmed my suspicions that I am not a poet. I love reading it, analyzing it, even translating it, but I'm not very good at writing it.
So to poetry I say:
Though our love affair has been brief
I just cannot grasp the mystique
Of writing your prose
I guess that's how it goes
When you don't understand how to force a rhyme or get the rhythm of iambic pentameter or really any other elements of what makes good poetry stand out from the bad.
And I promise you, that will be the last poem I write. At least until I get the idea in my head that I might enjoy trying it again. But I think I will leave that to the likes of Billy Collins and Richard Hugo or even Sharon Creech.
