Who needs a dentist anyway?

It's been a while *cough*ten years*cough* since I've been to the dentist, and I've finally decided to do something about it ( Read more... )

o.O

That's.... I have no words.

I'm suddenly feeling much more grateful for the healthcare system in Germany. If I want to get a check-up with the dentist, I either call them and make an appointment the following week or (if something's achey) I just pop by the clinic. I never really imagined that it would be so much different elsewhere.

I think they keep some openings for emergencies, so if I'd suddenly lost a tooth, I wouldn't have to wait for years to have it fixed. Which is something, I guess.

As far as I know this isn't an issue further south. It's probably a matter of finding staff. All kinds of health care professionals are in high demand here, because it's a small town and it's up in the ass-end of nowhere. Few people are willing to relocate.

Sounds like it's time for a combo dentist appointment/day out in the nearest biggish town.

:D

I did consider that for a hot second, but the nearest biggest town is 3.5 hours away, so I can't really pop down there after or before work.

That's where the day out half comes in. Pick a place with attractions you want to go to, then schedule around your dental visit.

You could drive down after work and spend the night, see the dentist first thing in the morning, and have the rest of the day free for exploration and fun. Schedule the appointment on [your subjective] Friday and you don't even have to rush back to make it in to work the next day.

Obviously, finances may impact that plan, but it's worth thinking about.

Actually, I talked to one of my colleagues about it, and she (after expressing shock at the 5 year waiting list) said that she went to a dentist in Luleå (which is the larger town in question), and that all dentist appointments count as "healthcare", so you don't get a pay-cut for taking a day off.

That means that it's mostly my conscience that's putting up roadblocks now. I know it's absolute hell to find substitute teachers for this school, since it's in a village a bit outside the town (and Kiruna isn't a sprawling metropolis to begin with). My colleague shares her class (which consists of the four and fifth-graders) with a part-time teacher who can cover for her, but I'm the only one in charge of the second- and third-graders.

I haven't really decided what to do yet. My mom has a friend with connections with the private dentist in town, so she might be able to get me in there. Otherwise I'll probably have to use your idea. We'll see!
