Don't you know that a white child in foster care who has been taken from their impoverished family because of physical abuse has more privilege than the child of millionaire African-American doctors because the white child's great-great-great-great grandparents might have owned slaves when Queen Victoria was on the throne?
People like to pretend that AO3 is this haven of fanfiction witch shit doesn't stink, and boy howdy, do they make me laugh about that. Every fanfiction site has its lows and highs. Besides I like the setup on fanfiction.net. It's neater in a way, reading wise. Atleast for me. I don't like to read fics on tumblr mostly. People tend to have weird texts and gifs so I can't read the story. I always have to copy and paste into word to be able to read it.
I would never read a fanfic like this. I do tend to judge the material of the story based on the tags the author gives. This is is just a big honking NO.
Ugh, Tumblr is abysmal for fic purposes. I don't get why people even bother. The worst I've ever seen was tiny text on a brightly patterned background, with animated Sherlock characters cavorting IN FRONT OF the text, while shitty anime music blared on autoplay. It's just... WHY.
I didn't really notice AO3's weaknesses while I was primarily reading SGA fic, because I was there for John, and he was such a popular character. It was attempting to find stories that actually are about Lestrade in the Lestrade tag that taught me that fanfiction.net's much more restrictive you-can-tag-with-two-characters-and-that's-it system is a lot more effective.
Also, fanfiction.net hasn't been infected with tumblr-type tags the way AO3 has been, and that's a plus.
The problem with tags on AO3 is that people use them two different ways: to find stories about specific characters and pairings, and to avoid encountering specific characters and pairings. So half the people tag one way, and half the other, and everyone's unhappy.
