1. I have found AU fics I enjoyed, usually I find I have genres I prefer for the characters to be put in (like college-fic or cop-fic). I think once I get "attached" to and get to know some characters, I have no problem transferring them to other realities. I read AU's after reading many, many canon and non-au fics.
2. I'll list the first three that come to mind: Drastically Redefining Protocol - rageprufrock - Merlin (BBC) : very AU - Arthur is the prince of Wales in modern times, Merlin is doing his residency as a doctor and does some magic, occasionally. They fall in love and get married. Bell Curve, or, Ladies Night at the Boom Boom Room - rageprufrock- SGA: couldn't be more AU: John is a grad student/ stripper/bartender/pilot and Rodney is a college professor. No Atlantis anywhere. 'C'hange or "How the Guitar Hero Gets His Bitch" - tru_faith_lost - Supernatural: RPS fic, they're actors on SPN, the AU part is that they're a couple (naturally) and that Jensen gets cancer
( ... )
I'm not an active fanfic reader anymore (QAF only), but here goes. 1. I like AU fics that are in-character, grammatically correct, plot-driven, and well-written. (few and far between!) 2. REAPER BOY by Wrenlet; GLOWING ROOMS by ohmyjetsabel; RESTRAINT by DarkEmeralds; and some of London's stories. 3. AUs can be in character if carefully written to reflect canon personalities. 4. The only crossover fic I enjoyed is REAPER BOY. I don't participate in other fandoms. 5. I have not really seen AU as "good," but, on reflection, it does seem one way to keep the fandom fresh and interesting. 6. Though I am still something of a snob about preferring original-fan writers, but in the past year, I found a number of "newbie" fan authors who are quite good, so I'm more open-minded than previously.

I'm especially interested in the problem of OOC in AU fics, for
exactly the reasons you state.
Thanks!
