I'm just as angry as everybody else but it also makes me feel so incredibly sad. I've had so many gay friends who battled with this sort of cruelty, that's how I see it - just like kids in the playground attacking a kid who isn't one of the majority. I still find it impossible to understand how people who appear educated, civilized, thoughtful types would be able to justify that behavior in the dark, silent hours when they think back over the way they have treated someone.
And as far as I can see they do it so that they can feel superior to someone else. Pretty pathetic.
The worst part of it was that the people putting the breaks on his career were themselves gay men -- that scene when one of them sees him in Palm Springs years later and says, "Didn't I fire you?" I would have creamed the guy! But that was the way things were.
