One of the things that immediately strikes me is that Diana is goddess of virginity, not love. She is certainly goddess of the hunt, but men who came on to her tended to suffer extremely - Actaeon, who accidentally glimpsed her naked, was turned into a stag, hunted by Diana's hounds and torn to pieces ( ... )

Yeah, pretty much that. And I think it actually ties in with Xander's series arc, because in some respects (not all) he is marginalized by the narrative -- i.e. he ends up being the person who does the least actiony male stuff and playing emotional support roles. The early seasons force Xander into the stereotypically feminine role as punishment, I think, but he eventually accepts the positive sides of it.
