I have thoughts on the Kindle, y'all

I'd been largely indifferent to the thought of getting an ebook reader for a while now. However, just recently, my dad got a Kindle. It's unthinkable for my dad to have a nifty gadget that I don't have, therefore I decided that I should have a Kindle, too. So I asked for and received a Kindle 3 for my birthday ( Read more... )

I do, actually, have a good number of fics on my "to-read" list on fanfiction.net, so YES! That site will come in handy! Though I haven't had too much trouble using Readability on fanfiction.net, multi-chaptered fics have been an inconvenience. :/

I make epubs out of fanfic with Calibre. It's more than a file system. It's a converter. I copypasta them into an rtf file and then use the converter. It will convert things to mobi.

Yeah, I know it can be used for conversions. I don't really need it for that since I've found an easier (for me) method of getting fanfics over to my Kindle.

I LOVE my kindle! I resisted for ages, as I like actual books, but in the end I caved, because whenever I travelled, half my suitcase would be books! Very heavy! Also, because the country where I currently live has not one single bookstore, so it's a great way to support my habit! I have found that books are cheaper on kindle than even paperback - but I have the overseas kindle, so maybe that makes a difference?

My biggest gripe is I read a lot of non-fiction autobiography kind of books, that usually come with photos, and you don't get the photos in the kindle. This makes me sad...no pretty pictures!

Are you saying there's a way to download fanfic to the kindle and read it? Because I never knew that and that would possible be the most awesome thing in the WORLD! Is one of those links up listed above that function? Imagine - fanfic on planes! The possibilities are endless!

Probably. :/

No pictures? Huh. The US version loads pictures, though they're in grayscale, of course. Better than nothing, I suppose.

Yes! If you use the Kindlebility bookmarklet, whenever you're on a page with some fanfic, click the bookmarklet and it'll be sent to your Kindle! Whammo! Awesome smutfic wherever you go! :)

Hmmm - this reply to my reply went to my email whilst I was on R and R and I noted it but didn't have two seconds to actually do anything about it (the concept of actually RESTing and RELAXing on R and R? Totally foreign to me!) But it's been in the back of my mind and I figured I would dig it out today. I want to try to play around with this a little now as the thought of having fanfic EVERYWHERE with me is almost too exciting (and scary - dude I would NEVER get anything else done in life!) Would certainly make plane rides more fun.

So I'm off to fiddle now. I just hope I can make this work. Thank you SO. MUCH. for the links...

Hmmm - I'm back - I'm confuzzled. Trying to play with all these things and thinking I need a step by step manual. Do you happen to have a link to a website somewhere that acutally TELLS me how to turn fanfic into kindle, pretty please? Would be eternally grateful...

ETA - don't worry - I rediscovered my ability to actually do something for myself and googled it!! Sorry to have been so pathetic. I'm currently still confused but have faith in my ability to sort this shit out! Many thanks

You can create "collections" on the kindle which helps with organization. It's not perfect, but much better than nothing!

Oh yeah, I've discovered those. :) But I'm an organizing nerd and need to be able to further subdivide things so I can have a "fanfic" collection which leads to "harry potter", "buffy", and "doctor who" folders and so on. Having everything lumped together makes me unhappy. :/

Well you could make separate collections -- HP fic, Buffy fic, Dr Who fic, etc. But once they're in collections, yes, a big mess.

I could, but then the Home screen looks messy, especially if I do the same for research articles and book. I'm particular about organizing things.
