Being a Fan: AtS Edition

Aug 14, 2010 17:35

Ah, AtS is always an oversight for me. In my just-posted poll on being a fan, I asked about BtVS but not AtS. Here I ask about AtS.

Let me copy&paste the directions from the previous poll (with appropriate AtS substitutions):

So here's the question on this one: As a whole, did you like the narrative of AtS? Starting from the first moments of City ( Read more... )

While I can't claim to like *everything* this time, I do still like the narrative as a whole. And, holy crap, 1 Yes to 6 No. *meep*

Eh, I have to many issues with AtS to give it a yes. I likely wouldn't have bothered with it if I weren't such a fan of Buffy. There's another yes! You have company!

Angel came first for me; so, that's probably a factor. On the whole, I really love it for (among other reasons) being so refreshing by comparison to most of what I'd seen before then.

I don't think I'm going to enjoy this thread as much as the other one.

Also, it looks like you have some new icons in your mix. I approve.

Hee! New icons! That always calls for a poll so I can put them to gratuitous use in comments. :)

Your icons rule. But they don't change my mind about AtS ;-).

Hee! Thanks.

That's cool. Everyone has their own perceptions, which is a good thing. Fandom would be boring beyond belief if everyone agreed.

I actually prefer Ats to Btvs, actually.

One of my lj friends is a classicist and she loves the plotting of AtS for its resemblance to Greek tragedy, which I can definitely see.

And hey, I like Eve, so I am all for unpopular opinions *g*.

The Cordy trainwreck is a huge issue I have with AtS. That and all the rest of the whole "killing off the wimmenz" that the series tends to do.

I did actually begin by liking S5, though. Until Fred died. Then I just gave up on the whole damn thing.

The draw of AtS for me is entirely in the characters. This is probably partially due to my lack of sympathy for the main character, but also, what the hell. There were so many missed opportunities, and then the same (aggravating and reprehensible) Evol Pregnancy story told over and over again. And I hate NFA. Hate it. I wouldn't mind if they go down fighting for a reason, but "Imma stick it to those assholes for a hot second just to show that I can" is suicidal, and the fact that we're supposed to see Angel as a hero when his last act is guilt-tripping his friends into suicide isn't just unsatisfying, it's wrong. I just don't like it.

I'm not trying to re-ignite the Angel & feminism thread, but JFC the sexism of this show, to the extent that even if I did like the story itself, I still wouldn't be able to enjoy the show because I feel so shit on when I watch it. Frex, I love Fred; I hate how her only job was to be an object of desire and/or pity. Lilah. Darla. Cordelia. Awesome! AND DEAD. In crappy ways, for stupid ( ... )

The feminism is the main issue I have with it (or the lack thereof). Also, I just don't like Angel for the most part. Though I suppose I credit AtS for giving me doofy!Angel, who I do enjoy.

In any case, that's all why I don't discuss AtS much. It's just not my thing. A bunch of dudes doing fun stuff with chicks dying in increasingly horrible ways? Yeah, whatevs.

Exactly. For that, we have approximately 47 seasons of NCIS: The Reckoning. There's still stuff in it that gives me chills ("God doesn't want you! But I still do.") but generally, I expect more from a Mutant Enemy project.

I could never get into AtS. I could never get that interested in Angel as a character either, so that might be part of it. I tried multiple times.

Didn't fill out the poll though, since I can't comment on the arc only seeing a few of the episodes.
