I can't say much for the string, other than the fact that "It's dark" would have been the excuse I went with.

For the second one, though, I'd point out that your screencap is in widescreen, when the original show was shot and broadcast in 4:3 aspect ratio, which would cut the guy right out. I don't think the show was ever meant to be viewed in widescreen, which probably means there are more goofs like this in such a format.

DB Woodside fanboys just about everybody. SMG and JM mainly, though. JM's lamentably quiet throughout the commentary.
