You raise some interesting points. Being almost completely unartistic myself, I can only say that I would have thought it was art even if it WAS for yourself or IS for personal gratification/use versus making a statement for the public to digest in a personal way. But I see your theory on that being a craft then and not really art... and I suppose that sounds like it could be right, too. I'm not sure that the two are mutually exclusive. Perhaps it can be both?

For me, art is about making a piece of the world the way I want it to be. That's why costuming appeals to me, I think--I want there to be some magic in the world, so I create it myself.

And as for art vs. craft...they're not mutually exclusive, right? Just because something is functional doesn't mean it's not a work of art. I think it's kind of a Venn diagram...art doesn't have to be functional and crafts don't have to be artistic but there's a large spot in the middle where a made item can be both. I definitely think of myself as a craft artist--or better yet, an artisan, which is a word that I think encompasses both.
