A/N: This is my first attempt at writing Caroline. I’m having a hard time getting into her head, so any comments anybody has are useful - even if they’re negative. I appreciate all feedback. This is in Caroline's POV.

Oh, that's a lovely line, and it's so true. Tyler, whose dad beat him up, Matt with his wandering mother, Elena's parents who're dead, Caroline's dad who left her for another man and her mom who tried to kill her, Bonnie, whose parents we've just never heard of really, so many fractured relationships, it's sad to think about and Caroline is always the second choice (a lot like Damon on that account).

That line was actually my husband Jeff's idea. I really wanted to write this fic and sometimes he helps me figure thoughts out in my head. He's the one who said that line and I loved it so much because it was so true. And this fic is based on Demi Lovato's song Believe in Me (link goes to the lyrics), which I thought fit Caroline well.

And yes, it's sad, but Caroline does always seem to be the 2nd choice, just like Damon. I agree with that - and it bugs me.
