The Next Baby Step: Part 6-- The Result

Meredith was taking deep breaths with her eyes closed afraid to look at the stick. It was time, and she paged Derek, who seemed like he was taking forever to get there. She knew she could have gotten tested with the tests they have available in the hospital, but, the same reason stopped her as it did before when she held herself back from shouting out after Izzie. She didn’t want the word getting around that she is, or suspects that she is. This was something she wanted to keep quiet. Between her and Derek, and well, Izzie. So, she went to the shop they have downstairs unnoticed, and bought a home pregnancy test.

“Meredith?” She heard Derek’s voice and opened her eyes while letting out the breath she inhaled but never released. “Are you alone?”

“Yeah, come in.” She watched as Derek opened the door to the women’s bathroom, walked through it, and closed the door behind him, locking it before making his way over to where Meredith was standing.

“Do you know yet?”

“No. I’m afraid to look at it.”

“Do you want to look at it at the same time?”

“Yeah, okay.” Meredith answered, sounding a little more at ease now that Derek was there with her. She held his gaze, not looking down until she saw any sign that he was about to. He shifted his position from standing next to her, to standing behind her, wrapping his arms around hers. They continued to hold each others gaze, which was now through the mirror, neither of them looking down at the test result that lay in front of both of them on the sink.

“You want to go on three?”

“Okay.”

“Alright, one, two…” Derek saw Meredith close her eyes and take another deep breath. “Three.” Meredith felt Derek lean more into her body which made her open her eyes and look down. “What does that mean?”

“I, I think it means I’m not,” Meredith answered.

“Think? Where’s the box?”

“Over there,” Meredith pointed to the stall that she was in and watched Derek through the mirror as he walked over to it and brought it over. He grabbed the stick and compared it to the box.

“Well?” Meredith watched as his brows furrowed, bringing the stick closer to him.

“It says that two lines is a positive result.”

“Yeah?”

“Look at it. There’s one dark line, but you can almost see another line.” Meredith took it from his grasp to see for herself.

“So we don’t know? It could mean I am, but it could mean I’m not?”

“Maybe it’s too early.”

“It was three weeks ago Derek, the night at the trailer. I think that qualifies as not too early.”

“I guess you can, try taking it again.”

“I don’t have to pee now.”

“I don’t mean right this minute. There were two in here right?” Derek asked while looking into the box to see the answer for himself. “Take it home. Try and again when we’re off work. But wait for me first.”

“Okay.” Meredith tossed the stick on the sink into the trash and grabbed the box from Derek, put it back in the plastic bag and wrapped it around to not be visible and shoved it in her lab coat pocket. Derek’s pager went off as he was watching her.

“Damn, I got to go,” he said while looking at the screen.

“Alright.”

“Wait for me tonight. If I don’t see you later, I’m telling you now, wait for me.” She watched him walk over to the door unlocking it, and looked her way smiling at her before walking out leaving her alone.

“So what, I’m not your person anymore?” Christina asked, catching Meredith by surprise.

“What? Of course you are. What makes you think that?” Meredith asked while putting the chart down, giving Christina her full attention.

“Izzie told me that you may be pregnant. You were the first one I told when I found out I was.”

“Izzie told you that?” Meredith asked frustrated.

“So you did talk to her. I didn’t believe her at first but..”

“I’m not. Or, I don’t think I am. I don’t know yet, I need to take the test again. But Izzie just thought I was because of something I said. It was stupid really. But you would be the first I would tell.”

“What makes you doubt the test?”

Meredith took a second before answering. She never thought to turn to Christina to ask this, and felt stupid for not thinking of it before.

“When you took the test, when you found out you were, was the answer clear?”

“What do you mean?” Christina asked, her brows knitting together.

“There was one dark line, and another that was visible, but, not as dark as the first. That made us think that there was a chance I was, but, didn’t know for sure.”

“Us?”

“Derek was with me.”

“Oh. Mine was pretty clear. Both lines were dark, so I had no doubts. I would say that you are though, since it was obvious that there was another one. No matter if it was dark or not. But, to be on the safe side, take it again.” Christina watched as Meredith went into thought, and she continued. “You better prepare yourself to be really big if you are,” Christina said with a smile, amusing herself with what she was thinking.

“Why do you say that? What makes you think I’m going to be bigger than any other pregnant lady that walks through the doors to the hospital?”

“It’s the McBaby Mer. That kid is going to come out with a pound of hair on it’s head. You’ll grow at least an extra inch because of it.”

Christina pawed at the chart she went over there in the first place to get and started walking away as Meredith started giggling to herself.

Derek was so happy he was home. The day seemed to drag like no other, and to make things worse, he was really upset that every time he tried to sneak off and page Meredith to see her, he was paged for something else. But none of that seemed to matter anymore because he was home. He ripped his key out of the ignition and jumped out of the seat and car and smiled at the sight of Meredith’s Jeep parked in the driveway.

“Meredith! Meredith, I’m home!” Derek shouted out when he opened the door. “Meredith!” He shouted out again, now storming down the hallway toward the staircase.

“What?” she asked from behind him. He wheeled around and saw her standing in the hallway, coming from the kitchen.

“Hi,” he said with a smile, his tone no longer in a shout, but down to an almost whisper.

“Hi,” she replied back, but was preoccupied with the spoon in her mouth so didn’t notice just how happy he was to see her. He looked in her hand and saw that she was holding an ice cream container, one that he noticed read ‘coffee ice cream.’ He reached for the spoon after she put her spoonful in her mouth to scoop out his own.

“What was your day?” he asked while sucking on the spoon, but looking only at her.

“It was a 7.”

“Mmm, good.”

“You?”

“5.”

“5? Why?”

“Because since I last saw you I’ve been wondering, daydreaming, mostly, about what may happen.”

“Christina said that if I am, I’m going to be big because our kid will be born with a pound of hair,” Meredith wrinkled her nose in amusement while scooping out another spoonful of ice cream.

“Well, come on, let’s find out!”

Meredith took an overview of him and saw how excited he was at the possibility.

“Okay,” she walked back into the kitchen and Derek watched as she put the container in the freezer and tossed the spoon in the sink, and walked back over to him and ahead of him toward the stairs. “Let’s go.” Derek quickly walked over to her to walk up the stairs at her side.

“So, what do you see?” Meredith called out to Derek who was in the bathroom looking at the result. He wanted to be the one to see the answer. She was fine with it, because a part of her was terrified. She knew that being a surgeon and having a baby changes things. She wasn’t all too sure if she wanted to have one or not. But Derek seemed so excited about the idea of it, that she was going to try and be happy. She would let him have this moment. Good or bad, she wanted him to be the first to know. Then maybe, the excitement would come later. She was about to call out to him again when she saw the door swing all the way open, with him walking through it.

“Is it done? Do we know?” Meredith hoped the shaking in her voice wasn’t as noticeable to him as it was to her.

“Yeah, we know.” Derek was trying to hold a straight face, but he couldn’t. Instead he ran over and pounced on the bed next to her, giving her a kiss and cradling her head in his hands while he looked at her. “It’s positive.”

“Seriously?!” Meredith felt a smile form on her face. Maybe she could do this. Derek looked so happy, she couldn’t help but feel it herself.

“Seriously,” Derek replied. He pulled down on Meredith’s legs, forcing her from her sitting position to laying down. He laid down right beside her, with his left cheek laying on her chest, gently putting his right hand on her stomach. They laid in silence, both taking in what they found out.

“Derek?”

“Hmm?”

Meredith looked down when she felt his head move from the position it was in, to look up at her, never moving his hand from her stomach. “We’re really going to do this.”

“We are.”

“We’re going to have another person in the house. Only, it’ll be a little person. A person that is part us. Part both of us.”

“Yes,” Derek moved his head again, and she watched as he kissed her stomach and then scooted up to face her. “There will be a person that is both of us,” he kissed her neck, feeling completely content.

“We’re really going to do this?” Meredith was now asking more than stating. He would take it badly, if he didn’t know her as well as he believed he did. This was Meredith ranting.

“Yes Mer, we are.” That was the only way he thought to answer.

“Okay,” she said while no longer looking at him, but straight ahead. He knew she was thinking.

“What is it?”

“When do we tell people? When do I tell Christina?”

Derek shifted back down to his previous position, with his right hand back on her stomach. “You can tell Christina tomorrow. It can just be us knowing right now.” His hand wrapped around her as he closed his eyes, taking in the moment. He felt her body shift and heard sounds of a cell phone keypad. His right eye opened, “you’re telling Christina aren’t you?”

“She’s my person.”
