Update on the virus thing: It is legit.
People (not a worm like we originally thought) are hacking into mod accounts, posting fake goodbye/closing posts in communities and then deleting the content of the community and the journal.
This is what the virus post, with comments disabled, looks like:
Dear friends, I, as the maintainer of the community, have to inform you that, due to the recent tragic events, I've decided to stop using LJ as a platform for my community. From now on, all new materials should be posted to the new community I've recently created, as for old posts, you will be able to find them there.
There are several links embedded within the text, all of which lead you to viral, infected sites. THIS IS FAKE. DO NOT CLICK ON THEM. Sometimes just clicking on a link can download malware onto your computer, there's no need to actively download anything.
We're working on backing up the community just in case anything happens. If you see any bizarre posts in the community, let a mod know via PM or email ASAP. Also, if you see the post please report it to LJ Support (by clicking the little orange flag on the entry toolbar) and LJ Abuse. We're trying to keep a close eye on the community for a few days because of this, but there's always the chance that one of us might not be online.
Info:
epic, giant source #1,
what to do if your journal does get hacked,
source #3.
Resources:
Ad Aware,
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware,
Norton AntiVirus 2009 (this is a free 14-day trial, but it's probably the best antivirus program out there and fourteen days is enough time to clean your drive).
ETA! We've temporarily removed this account from mod/maintainer status since it's a shared journal and the password is posted somewhere in the mod community. The only people who should be doing mod posts are
callalily_love,
irinafan,
kickaboutheart,
openended, and
slybrunette.
Thanks everyone!
