There is a fix. From a friend: "You should be able to switch back to the old version. On the main page there is a question mark in a bubble in the top right, click on it and you can switch back and send in feedback." And it works just fine.

Good article, well balanced.

Major problem is that there's still nothing to replace LJ in the major fandom communities. DW is good, but a lot of communities never made the switch, Tumblr isn't exactly an interactive medium, and... well, nothing has really come about for fandom. Otherwise, it's a normal progression of replacements as tech evolves, but we're left at the moment with a platform that's not great and nowhere to go.
