IE Hates Me

So. I'm trying to figure out what the HELL is wrong with my IE. Just all of a sudden yesterday it decided to stop showing any web pages - it connects fine, it opens fine, but nothing at all displays (white screen). When I refresh, it gives me the 'this page cannot be displayed' blah blah, and if I try to open any other pages, same thing. NOTHING is ( Read more... )

Ok. From Tech Republic:
I consistently found the CPU maxing out and having to kill all my instances of IE. I finally uninstalled IE 7 and have been using IE6, but with lots of issues. I'm afraid I really need to reinstall the whole computer as a result of trying IE7.

IE7 is *full* of bugs: My personal recommendation to all my clients is to stick with Firefox as their primary browser with the IEtab extension and keep a fully patched IE6. I've also warned them that MS is sending out IE7 as an update. This is an example of why I recommend most people turn off automatic updates and do weekly manual updates, choosing the 'custom' and not 'express' option. It's more work, but unfortunately, necessary.

solution/workaround: For now, either revert to IE6.x, or don't install IE7 in the first place.

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer, released on May 8. There are details and fixes at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931768

Generally, however, the problem is most likely to be caused by an add-on, which is known in Microsoft jargon as a BHO (Browser Helper Object). You can get a good idea if this is the case by running IE7 with no add-ons, which is easy because Microsoft has provided a separate version. To run it, go to Start|Programs|Accessories|System Tools and select Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)

If all else fails, you can reset IE back to a base level. To do this, go to the Control Panel, run the applet called Internet Options and click the Advanced tab. There is a button at the bottom labelled Reset. This deletes temporary files, disables all add-ons and reverts any changes you have made to settings. It warns: "You should only use this if your browser is in an unusable state."

IETAB, which is a Firefox addon, which solves that problem. When I leave the website, I automatically revert to Firefox.

About 10 days ago TR had a hardware problem and the IE browsers would time out and fail to make a connection. It's still going on today but not quite as bad. Personally I would make FF my Default Browser and use that as it's just plain and simple better and easier to use. Failing that remove IE7 reinstall IE6 and all the patches for it and use IE6 as your default Browser it's has Tabs so there is absolutely no reason to work with IE7 which is slower and works worse than IE6 ever did. OH BTW you'll have to go into Windows Live Update select the Custom Option and then when you get the available updates shown click on the second level and then untick the IE7 Box and open it up and tick Hide this File. That way you'll never see it again and you'll have something that nearly works instead of something that almost works.

I read that there is a bug in IE7 that it cannot display pages that have a meta tag of "refresh" in their headers, but I can't imagine that every single page out there has this header tag.

I have IE7 and I've never experienced this problem, sorry.

Yeah -- it just freaked out all of a sudden. I *might* have an idea what messed it up, and need to poke around in McAfee to see if I can fix it, but otherwise... I have no clue. :|
