It's true - the squeaky wheel gets the grease. But what about the other wheels who roll along, carrying their load without complaint ( Read more... )

unfortunately, marketing is a huge factor in these things. Folks need to know about you before they can learn the quality of what you provide.

"You're the worst pirate I've ever heard of!"
Jack Sparrow: "But you have heard of me."

Toot the horn, girl. It's hard, but do it. It's not an inconvenience to others, if they then learn about you and how kick ass you are. Then it's a benefit and they will be happy you shouted loud enough for them to hear.

I completely sympathize. On the one hand, though, the first responder is right; there's a degree of tootin' one's own horn that is necessary from time to time. Fortunately for our sensibilities, it doesn't have to be too loud, or ever-present; sometimes, it just takes a moment of sitting back in the chair and announcing loudly (and humorously) that "THE WORLD MAY NEVER KNOW HOW MUCH I ROCK AT THIS VERY MOMENT."

I can only agree, though, that people who complain and whine and whatnot often get more attention, despite the fact that many times, they probably shouldn't - it just reinforces bad behavior.

I'm looking for jobs now (after some time off), so I have to engage in a little horn-tooting of my own, and this sort of discussion really helps ramp me up for it.

Be your own wittiest cheerleader! Rah rah rah!

Yeah, I agree with the ladies. I feel the same way and going on job interviews really brings it into focus. Of course a job interview is where you're SUPPOSED to toot that horn, so I'm trying to get some practice. Look at it this way... it's polite and acceptable to bring attention to positive things, your own accomplishments as much as anyone else's. It's not like you're going to turn into one of those people who walks into a room bringing all their drama with them looking for pity. People like to say "yay!"

what has inspired this post, I wonder? are you simply annoyed by someone's behaviour, or have you been subjected to a detriment becuase you are getting treated in an inferior fashion?

But what about the other wheels who roll along, carrying their load without complaint?

...they don't need the grease. or, if they do, they should squeak. I am a champion complainer, which sometimes irritates those around me. however I take care - or try to, anyhow - to distinguish mere grousing from actual Needs.
