Om nom nom

For the past five weeks I have been cooking most of my meals at home and eating very healthily. It feels wonderful! I have more energy and am losing weight, but the exciting thing is it has renewed my love of food.

I've recently started shopping at the fabulous Ferry Building Farmer's Market. I have no idea why I never shopped there before. ( Read more... )

distance to market fgmr January 11 2011, 18:28:56 UTC
The vendors are caring about distance to market, but they're still using diesel trucks. I want to start a move to get them using horse-drawn wagons again .. I can just picture a column slowly trudging over the bridge.

Hopefully these artisans are on their way to being carbon-neutral, but I'm waiting for the day when the food is advertised as "carbon-free organic."

This is the first I've seen of it, but I hope it's true, too. I suppose at some point NOAA will release an official report regarding the fisheries. Although they're just referring to the US fisheries, which means anything caught outside the US or by non-American boats would still be subject to the usual suspicion.

On a related note, I just happened to be reminded of this film: http://endoftheline.com/ It addresses the worldwide problem, so it's a different focus than the US fisheries.

I <3 the Ferry Plaza farmer's market but for the raw items, you may also want to look at the Alemany Farmer's Market as they have more selection of veggie booth options and they lack the Ferry Plaza pricing.

I went to the Alemany market just once, but I saw lots of commercial vendors and very few organic/sustainable-farming vendors. I don't want to buy commercially-grown produce, so I now just skip that market and go directly to the Ferry Building where most stuff is organic/sustainable.

Ah, I hadn't paid that much attention to the percentages of organic vs. not so long as what we were grabbing was. That would explain the additional quantity of options. We used to go more frequently but getting a weekly veggie box kind of lowered the need. I guess the biggest reason we choose Alemany is that it lacks the chance to spend way too much at all the little shops inside...nom nom nom.
