Diving challenges and confidence

You know, there's nothing like trying something completely different to put you in your place when you're feeling pretty confident about something. For me, the "something" is scuba diving, and the "something completely different" is actually two separate things: aquarium diving and drysuit diving ( Read more... )

That's pretty cool, I didn't realize birds would stay under water long enough to hang out.

My first dive was in the reef shark aquarium exhibit in Sentosa, Singapore. It was mind-blowing, I felt like an astronaut. I thought about joining the dive team here at the Coney Island aquarium, but they want you to wear full face masks so that you can teach while in the exhibit- but I don't know how easy those are to use- I'm still a pretty new diver so I still get a little anxiety in new situations.

I totally want to go diving in CA w/ sean lions and the kelp forests- but I'm not anywhere near ready to deal w/ cold water and dry suits. I already feel like I have so much gear on just wearing a 3mm! But you're really lucky to have the opportunity to dive year round.

I'm supposed to learn how to use a full-face mask for presentations as well, and I think it will be very weird. But for the time being I'm using my own mask and that's great, as it adds to my comfort level. I'm sure that when I eventually do use the full-face mask, I'll be posting here about how it went ;)

You can dive with the sea lions in warm water! Day trips from La Paz, Baja California, Mexico will take you to the Los Islotes sea lion colony. The best time to go is September-October when the water is over 80F and the babies are venturing away from mom and exploring the lagoon.

Neat, I'll have to add that trip to my wish list. Definitely post when you try out the FFM, I'm really curious about them, but no one at my dive shop has even tried one! I can't decide if I'd feel freaked out b/c you can't switch regs easily if you need to, or if I'd like it because I'd be able to breathe through my nose...
