15. And now, a political aside

Aug 08, 2005 00:52

I really meant to post this a few days ago, but by the time inspiration had struck I was busy for the weekend; I've only just now been able to sit down, catch up on things, and try to find the words to put to paper -- or screen, as the case may be. In any case, this time I'm going to babble about something with nothing to do with me. Feel free to ( Read more... )

I think you put into words exactly why I watch The Daily Show as well. I think it deserves more props for what they're doing, seeing as they do go a little above and beyond just simply entertaining.

I also agree on "This Week in God" being the funniest segment. I still have a soft spot for Produce Pete though..

I'm more and more amused by the polls that come out now and again, where the percentage of people who /do/ rely on things like The Daily Show for their news versus more traditional outlets keeps growing. You'd think someone would pay attention to that...but then, given how fictional most of the reporting on Fox News tends to be, maybe they are.

I'm touched.

Just so we're clear it was vaguely like one of those "daddy don't touch me there" things, but I think I might recover from this one, this time. But next time? I want dinner and a cocktail, got it? Dinner and a cocktail. None of that house liquor, either, and believe me buddy, I'll know.

Just as long as no one asks you to point out places on the teddy bear where you were touched. I'd feel bad, at least for a few minutes.

Just the few minutes they were cuffing you. I understand. Your secret's safe with me.

I used to catch The Daily Show more when I lived in America, but yes, Jon Stewart has a wonderful way with the camera and words.

I'd offer to tape, but out-of-date news is a little less useful than fictional news is. Though really, this is what I think the internet is best for, since I know there are video files out there for the really good snippets.

"Saved by satanic competence"

That should be tattooed on somebody. Somebody that is not me, but somebody.

You know, I consider it news, because it's more about giving you what the important bits are about the news, than the real news channels. And by the way, his Crossfire thing, wow.

You've definitely got a point about them being better about giving you the important bits. It's more that they don't try so much to be thorough about the news on any given day; they just pick a few stand-out items and focus on them. They're certainly more /informative/ than what's generally considered news, without having to worry about being impartial.

I didn't get to see the Crossfire thing live, only on the video file that was being passed around afterward. I almost wish I'd been in the audience, though -- I wanted to hold up my lighter and cheer like I was at a rock concert.

I didn't see it live either, I went looking for it after seeing him talk about it on the show. The best part is that the show was cancelled afterward, you know?

I hear Colbert's getting his own show. Maybe they'll broadcast it after Stewart so we'll have an hour of great TV.

Yeah, that is a rather telling conclusion to the whole Crossfire thing, isn't it -- Jon comes on, points out they're not really debating but perpetuating a broken system...and then shortly after, the show's not on the air anymore. Gives you a little hope that not all is lost quite yet in this country.
