I don't know if it's right, but since he was introduced I always believed it was Gwaine, that is at least how I write it :)

I've seen Gawain traditionally, but Gwaine most often associated with Merlin (BBC).

The Merlin fandom seems to write Gwaine, although yeah, traditionally it would be Gawain. But Gwen as short for Guinevere is hardly traditional either, or Morgana for Morgan, so yeah... I'd probably go with Gwaine.
