Wow, this is excellent. Very eerie and evocative. I liked how you opened with the page from the book with a theory of alternate universes -- set up the context well and gave an interesting weight to the repeating line, "Was there something else I was supposed to be?"

I love this -- the low rumble and drag, the creepy excellence. It feels like spinning out while driving on gravel, with moments where you're back in control before the road drags you back around again.
