how to read a book

Feb 04, 2007 17:20

Since I have been reading nonstop recently, I have developed a few strategies to remain relatively sane. Although some texts resist such funning, my reading load seems significantly lighter now. If you have any other suggestions, gimme. I need help ( Read more... )

Aren't you going to remark at my list-making perversity? I'm affecting a mental disorder. How am I doing? By the way, none of those reading strategies are necessary when reading The Mad Man. That shit is whack. You should like it. It's about a graduate philosophy student who follows the gay life of a Korean-American philosopher.

are you at the end of a quarter? my favorite is marginalia. i make use of that one all the time, but i might try the bunny rabbit one... although psych papers don't really have 'characters.' i guess i could pretend the authors were bunnies, or the subjects were bunnies, but there's enough animal testing out there as it is...

Hi Fuson. My name's Matt. I'm a friend of Ursula's from high school (we met once, I think, when I came to visit her at Stanford). She referred me here in a comment on my blog (http://oubliesurlacarte.wordpress.com/... )

Hi. Did we play that question game from Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead? If so, I do remember your visit. You're probably further along in your PhD program; I'm still a lowly first year since I spent some time figuring out that I didn't really want to do a PhD in math or statistics. I'll be taking a theory course next quarter so I'll be more well-versed in de Man and Derrida then. Right now, I seem to have picked classes that deal with media theory (Kittler and Luhmann), queer theory (Butler and Sedgewick), and post-colonial theory (a bunch of authors).

Nice to hear from you again. We can hang out if you're ever in LA. I'll be sure to check out your blog.

Well, it was a long time ago (I think freshman year, which would be 7ish years ago), but the question game sounds about right. It seems like the kinds of theory you're pursuing in your classes is much more timely than the stuff I'm reading (who reads de Man seriously these days? Derrida maybe, but not so much de Man...it's a shame, really...though I can tell you, there's some shady stuff at UCI clouding up Derrida's legacy as of the past couple of weeks - shady on UCI's end too, but not exclusively...).

Anyway, I'll drop you a line next time I head up to LA. It's not all that often (maybe once or twice a quarter) but I'll let you know - I'm all for connecting disparate contexts.
