I have discovered, much to my sorrow, that it is actually really a lot easier for me to read things on computer screens than it is on paper--last night I did not want to go downstairs to get our copy of The Complete Sherlock Holmes because it was late and I was lazy, so I went to Project Gutenberg instead, and hey, holy shit, I was like 200% more ( Read more... )

i like actors, sherlock holmes, i have a crush on every boy, i like books, i has a meme

Matt Smith as long as it isn't pushed back, dear god man, you should have figured out by now that emphasizing your face is not a good idea

oh my god this made me laugh so hard because it's so true.

IT IS. I mean, I love the guy, and if his hair's right I would be all over him, but--well, I think th_esaurus once said "sometimes he overcomes the tragedy of his face". And sometimes he does not.

I've only seen one episode with Burke so I haven't formed a real attachment yet, but I expect I shall by the time it's through. D: Still, if I can manage to watch Doctor Who...

that none of the "big" Holmes adaptations have ever done A Study In Scarlet, probably for very good reasons
I am curious! I want to know what you think the reasons are. In general (without reference to this story) I would have thought that cost/special effects would have been a big reason not to adapt a particular text into film; but for this one, the only reasons I can identify would be 1. length/complexity of story and hence 2. cost. I was curious as to why you thought that story hadn't been adapted.

re. speed-reading preference for paper/screens: I'm a speed-reader and I prefer paper; but it's a personal thing. Maybe it's a spoiler issue situation, rather? I love spoilers and don't mind catching the next line as I read.

Meme Question!
Since you were talking about hair!

1. 5 RL actors/actresses you think have awesome hair! AND/OR
2. 5 RL actors/actresses you think are gorgeous. Physically, spiritually, emotionally, professionally, you name it. ♥ ANY DEFINITION OF BEAUTY YOU PREFER.

Hah, well, the thing about A Study In Scarlet is that while it does an excellent job of introducing the characters to both the audience and each other, and while it has a decent enough mystery...it also has a solid chunk in the middle that is devoted almost entirely to Evil Evil Mormons In The Lifeless Wasteland Of The American Midwest. :P Seriously, Holmes and Watson aren't even there, it feels like you've stepped into a completely different book. I personally find it all rather hysterical ("a land of despair", Arthur? really?), but it's pretty cringeworthy stuff. As for cost/length, the book is hardly more than 100 pages and I don't think it'd cost more than the other semi-book-length one, which has been filmed many times. This is what Holmes fans are referring to when they mention The Bit About The Mormons; it's really quite infamous. *g ( ... )
